The Short Answer
Quantum computers won't destroy Bitcoin overnight, but they will make it fundamentally insecure within this decade or next. The question is when, not if.
The Threat Is Real
- Breaking Bitcoin requires ~2,000-4,000 fault-tolerant qubits (current: ~100 physical)
- Bitcoin could hard-fork to PQC (governance nightmare)
- Reused addresses are most vulnerable
What Bitcoin Isn't Doing
No BIP gaining consensus for PQC. Decentralized governance makes rapid changes extremely difficult.
The Alternative: Quantum-Safe from Day One
BMIC uses NIST-approved PQC at the wallet level. As NewsBTC noted, smart money is flowing to quantum-safe alternatives.
