Google Willow: A Quantum Milestone
In December 2024, Google unveiled Willow — a 105-qubit quantum chip that achieved a computation in under 5 minutes that would take the world's most powerful classical supercomputer approximately 10 septillion (10²⁵) years. This benchmark represents exponential progress in quantum computing capability.
Can Willow Break Bitcoin?
Not yet. Breaking Bitcoin's ECDSA cryptography requires approximately 2,000-4,000 fault-tolerant logical qubits. Willow has 105 physical qubits. However, the trajectory matters more than the current state:
- IBM targets 100,000+ qubit systems by 2033
- Microsoft's topological approach could accelerate the timeline
- Error correction improvements are compounding
The Real Concern: "Harvest Now, Decrypt Later"
Even before quantum computers can break crypto in real-time, every blockchain transaction is publicly visible and permanently stored. Nation-states are collecting this data today for future decryption.
How to Protect Your Crypto
Currently, only one project is building quantum-safe crypto infrastructure: BMIC. Using NIST-approved post-quantum algorithms, BMIC's wallet protects transactions against both current and future quantum attacks.
As NewsBTC reported, smart money is already flowing toward quantum-safe crypto solutions.
